WAYS TO MAKE MONEY AS A NIGERIAN STUDENT.
Not everyone has the luxury of receiving money from home at intervals and as a student in a Nigerian university, the cost of maintaining yourself to survive, and not even living your best life, is like 30 million Naira.
Below are some tips on how to reasonably make ends meet while in school.
1. Learn a tech skill:
This is a long term commitment that requires lots of dedication, time and focus. You can’t just become a “tech bro/sis” overnight. Behind the flexing of every tech bro/sis, were nights of burning the midnight candle. To go through this route, you need patience, as well as the right learning platform. This could be through a friend or a paid course. You can learn video editing, graphics design, website development, coding etc.
2. Writing gigs:
This is one of the easiest ways to make money as a student. If you have a flair for writing, then this might just be your thing. Build up your portfolio by writing in your leisure time, or you can start by taking up volunteer writing tasks to build up your writing skill and attain expertise in a particular niche, if required. After this, you can apply for writing gigs through Linkedln, or through other social media platforms like X (formerly twitter), Facebook and the rest.
Not only that, there are also freelancing platforms where you can market your writing skills and get interested persons. They include Fiverr, Upwork, DynamiteJobs and others. If you
however feel these are too stressful, you can just ask around and people would
outsource writing gigs to you.
3. Mini-CEO:
If you still don't fall into any of the categories above, then this is for you. Afterall, not everyone is made to be so intellectual. If you have a trade skill like catering, shoe making, tailoring
and others, you can try to balance your academic life whilst harnessing your trade skills. Trust me, this can go a long way in making ends meet. You might even end up making a career out of this, in the long run, and jilting your degree.
4. Crypto:
This is not for the faint-hearted. In fact, I’ll put this in the same category as Sporty bet. They both have the propensity to make and mark you within seconds. If you’re naturally broke, or susceptible to high blood pressure, don’t go near this one o.
But investing in crypto can pay off depending on your skill and knowledge. However,
some have said it’s by luck. But as a caveat, please do not invest any borrowed or budgeted money and most definitely not your “last card” in crypto. Trust me, you might cry!
5. Competitions:
You’re good at essays or you’re a fantastic public speaker, then your 'time to shine' is not far from you again, because on campus, there is always one or two competitions going on. Look out on social media or on people’s statuses. Several inter-faculty debates are usually organized within universities, and also several essay competitions by organizations especially at the beginning of the session or to mark an event. Most of these competitions come with cash prizes which you never know, you just might win one.
6. Internships: Internships are also a good way of getting money as an undergraduate.
Some companies pay their interns at the end of the period, while some don’t. You can
ask around before applying if the money is what you’re after.
7. Airdrops: This also requires time and effort, however, it’s low risk. It’s considered low risk
because you might not necessarily have to pay any application fee or registration fee. Most
times, you just sign up, possibly refer other people and perform some daily tasks. The only problem is that there is a 50/50 chance it might not be launched which would mean wasted effort but there's however, no harm in trying.
