Resumption tips: OAU Freshers' edition

Hi there, dear Freshman, take this as my welcome gift to you to OAU. These

tips below, will help you settle in quickly especially with the pre-lectures registrations and I'm sure of this because it worked just well for me in my first year in this jungle and now, guess who's in her penultimate year?

Obafemi Awolowo University

1. Get your relevant documents ready: For the freshers resuming, you’ll need important

documents like your O-level results, jamb result, admission letter, birth certificate, local government certificate and others. These documents would be needed for your various departmental and faculty clearances. Some other documents like clearance certificate would probably be available through your e-portal. You’ll be required to print, fill and submit some of these documents.

2. Go to your department for information: This is actually very important so you don’t get

frustrated initially. It’s advisable to go to your department to know the documents you’ll

need for the registration and also the amount you’re required to pay for departmental

and faculty freshers fees. These fees are important, as it is to be used for your freshers’

packages, and other souvenirs depending on your departmental or faculty executives.

3. Health centre registration: If you’ve not been frustrated before, health centre registration

will test you! So basically, freshers have to do a couple of registrations like the library

registration, hostel clearance (if you got bedspace), health centre registration and others.

The problem is, some of your mates will go and queue at health centre as early as 4am

and might still not be able to do it that day. That’s how stressful it can be. However, a

little trick is to either go really early immediately you resume or just wait till the middle of

the semester or the break to complete the registration. The most important thing asides

completing the registration is to get the Health centre card. The number on the card

would be requested from you before you can access health services there. Oh, and

drugs are free for students who have gotten the card!

4. Passports: Trust me, just get a lot. You’ll need passports for nearly any registration you

attempt to do. From health centre, to faculty, to hostel, to the rest. In fact, you can even

keep the excess and use them later. Passport no dey expire. However, be careful

though, you might be told to bring passports with blue background or white background,

depending on what you want to use it for. Your best bet is to snap with either a white

background or blue background.

5. Check online for SU approved prices on campus: Make you no go pay bike man 800

naira from SUB to Law. The GreatIfe Student Union (GISU) releases approved price list

for several items on campus ranging from transport prices like buses and bikes, to prices

of commodities being sold. Be on the lookout when it drops so you don’t get scammed. The beautiful thing is that the moment they are aware that you know of these Union regulated prices, they no born their papa well to still misbehave. So, no loose guard

6. Patience: The first week of resumption will be stressful. Different fellowships and tutorials

would be inviting you, you might have to leave your room as early as 8am and return

around 5pm. Yes, it would be that stressful. However, ensure you’re patient to handle it,

no do pass yourself, and have fun.
