All you need to know on internships as a student. part1

Internships are very important ways of standing out among others during job applications. Some are paid, while most are not. Students however struggle with finding the right internships, or limit their internships to their specific field of study. Please note that this might not apply to some category of students, like the medical students because, where else una wan intern before?

Below are some other sectors students can intern in:

1. Law Firms:

As a law student, even though you’re encouraged to be dynamic and

explore, interning at a law is priceless. This is not just limited to law firms, interning at a

2. Accounting Firms:

This applies not just to accounting students, but also students from humanities, social sciences, administration, and law. Accounting firms offer a variety of services like preparation of financial statements, auditing, tax filings, advisory opinions and others. Interning there would be great on your CV. You might want to check out the

Big 4 in Nigeria, which are KPMG, PWC, EY and Deloitte. But if you can’t get into these, you

can apply to any other accounting firm you feel will add value to you.

3. Oil Companies:

Generally, getting internships in energy firms are always tricky, but they’re also internships that would look good in your CV. Imagine having “Shell” or “Exxonmobil” in your CV.

4. Tech Companies:

Interning in tech companies is also a great way to kickstart a career in the tech industry, and this applies to every student. You can intern in telecommunications companies like MTN, Airtel, Glo etc., or pure tech companies like Cowrywise, Piggyvest, and even start-ups.

5. National corporations:

National corporations are also places a student can intern. Although getting such internships might be difficult due to the fact that these corporations rarely or even never advertise such openings. However, having such internships would be great. Examples are The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), though it’s technically a private company now, Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and others.

6. International companies: The dream of almost every student is to intern at a reputable

international firm. This would eventually open several future opportunities. In fact, who

knows, it might be your japa ticket in disguise. We have companies like Bank of America,

Goldman Sachs, Linklatters, and others.
