All you need to know about internships part 2
Sequel to our previous post regarding places a Nigerian student can intern, there are
numerous ways of securing these internship slots which would be discussed below.
1. Direct Application:
Some firms send out applications for internships with which qualified candidates are enjoined to apply. Not all firms do this, but those that do it always have a link or email or attached to it. These internship applications are usually just straight forward as you would just be sending in your CV and cover letter. Some might however require a reference letter from a lecturer as well as other requirements. Either way, be on the lookout!
2. Departmental/ student associations:
Some departmental bodies have internship slots with some firms for their members and the criteria might just be payment of departmental dues. To know this, you might need to ask from either the president or the general secretary. The same goes for student bodies/ associations, only that in this case, you might have to be a really active member of such association. Also, you might have to know the President or head of the club. (Just kidding)
3. Linkedln:
Linkedln is the hub of internship opportunities. You’ll find almost anything there.
Ranging from internship roles, graduate trainee roles, job opportunities and conferences etc, both Nigerian and international. You should connect with the right people and
follow the right pages to be abreast of these opportunities. There are also some
student-related pages that post everything student-related opportunities which you can
follow, like Seo Africa.
4. Essays and competitions:
Occasionally, some competitions like debate competition, oral
presentations or even essays can be organized on campus or online which you might
want to hop on. You never know, the sponsors of these events might be your dream firm
or a person working there and can offer internship opportunities to the winners asides
the monetary prices or otherwise.
5. Cold-mails:
The art of send cold emails is sacred to internship seekers (iykyk). A lot of
internships have been gotten through sending cold emails. What are cold mails, you may
ask? It’s just sending your application together with your necessary credentials to an
email address, either the HRs email address or a top ranking officer in the company. The
thing about cold mails is that there is usually no advertisement for the roles. You’ll take
the risk by searching for the relevant email address and shooting your shot. Your shot
can miss o. In fact, there is a 60% chance the HR might be wearing bulletproof (Just
kidding). After sending the mail, don’t forget to send reminders at intervals. It’s not that you’ll start disturbing the person o. You should know when to stop when you’re being ignored, but just know that you have nothing to lose.
